California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy – also known as SB 1383 – takes effect in January, 2022 and will require city and county jurisdictions to compost their green waste, such as food scraps and yard debris, in an effort to reduce the release of greenhouse gasses emitted by organic materials decomposing in our landfills.

Beginning in 2022, SB 1383 requires every jurisdiction to provide organic waste collection services to all residents and businesses.  

The Co-op Trail is about jumpstarting a movement for truly regenerative travel, which entails both an eco-friendly mode of transport as well as operating in a just and sustainable economy. We feel that we're part of larger awakening taking place about environmental and economic justice, and the solidarity economy and the co-op movement are a crucial part to realizing a new future. The Co-op Trail is our attempt to join in this movement by making it more tangible to others who are new to these ideas and want to get to know the sense of scale of this economy.

According to the Humboldt Waste Management Authority, over one third of all waste going to local landfills is food or food-related. As it decomposes in landfills, food waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide, among other costly and problematic effects. Meanwhile, County residents have very limited options for diverting their food waste.

Every year, Humboldt County sends thousands of pounds of organic waste to our out-of-state landfill. In the oxygenless (anaerobic) landfill environment, organic matter breaks down into greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane.

Humboldt County has a food waste problem. According to the Humboldt Waste Management Authority, over ⅓ of all waste going to landfills is food or food-related.
